PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is one of my favorite mediums to explore with young people. Below are a few of the projects I've facilitated over the years:

BOSQUE SCHOOL ALPHABET (2010)

​Based on Wendy Ewald's American Alphabets, I worked with a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to generate an alphabet of terms that described the culture of their school. After staging photos for each word, they altered the prints with ink and paint. The project culminated with a presentation for the school and printed posters.

RE-PRESENTING (2005-2006)

This after-school program connected ten, middle school girls from Chicago’s West Side with ten girls of the same age from the Junior Art Club, an after-school program for underserved youth run by Kelvin Asare-Williams in Accra, Ghana.  While deconstructing mainstream depictions of women, “Africans,” and “Americans,” participants used cameras, audio recordings, and autobiographical writing to represent themselves and their communities. 

 

Each group exchanged work via email and post.  The project culminated with a community exhibition at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago and the creation of a project website.

FOCUS YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY

"FROM OAKLAND TO ACCRA AND BACK" (2003-2004)

Working with Oakland’s Museum of Children’s Art and Cole Elementary School, the FOCUS program (helmed by photographer Carolyn Carr) was committed to offering high-quality photo education to young people from underserved communities.

From Oakland to Accra and Back was a yearlong, self-documentary photography and writing project for FOCUS students in 2004.  The project featured an exchange of images and writing with students from the Junior Art Club, an after-school arts program led by Kelvin Asare-Williams in Accra, Ghana.  In the project, students determined which aspects of their lives they wanted to document and share with young people living in another part of the world.  The exchange culminated with an exhibition of work created by both groups at the Oakland Museum of Children's Art (examples below).

In collaboration with the Spanish Cultural Center in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, I worked with four young people ages 7-12 in this self-documentary photo project (student work below).

ACCRA: THROUGH THE EYES OF THREE (2010)

As part of the Student Project for Amity Among Nations,  I worked with three students ages 8-12 in this self-documentary photo project (student work below).
